NCAA Championship Game Makes History: Duke vs Butler
Mens' college basketball division 1 team is known for one of the teams with the most wins, most successful mens' basketball programs, as well as hated by many. But that what happens when a team like Duke continues to prove their selves year after year.
Just like the Bulls of the late 90s, the Celtics and Lakers of the early 80s and 90s, the hate comes along with being the best. You will forever be the “Big Dog” and most teams you play in a major title game will be considered the underdog. And we all know how much we like the underdog story but that wasn’t the case as Duke went up against Butler for the NCAA tournament Final Four title.
It would’ve been a story book ending for Butler, who had 2 chances to win the game with 4 secs left, however Butler; who doesn’t have an NCAA tournament final four title to their credit, made their first appearance in the Final Four. They gave the Blue Devils all they could handle and then some. On the other hand, Duke has won 4 NCAA championships and appeared in 15 final fours - so experience can be credited on their behalf.
This was a memorable game and one that will go down in history as one of the greatest NCAA Final Four games of all times. It is not just because of how good the game was but the margin of victory by Duke. With a final score of 61-59, it is the closest margin since the Michigan defeated Seton Hall 80-79 in 1989. In the End it was the defense of the Blue Devils that helped them win their Fourth NCAA Final Four Title. Butler proved to be a worthy opponent and erased all the doubt about the luck which carried them to the Championship Game.
In the end, victory belonged to the Blue Devils and with a tournament filled with unsets and plenty of underdog stories, it seemed as though all the cards were in favor of Butler... but you just can’t deny Duke.
