8.8 Magnitude Earthquake in Chile
Massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile this early a.m. on February 27, 2010 at 3:34 (1:24ET) with mind blowing aftershocks every hour as high as 6.7 magnitude.
Killing at least 122 people, so far accounted, and triggering a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific basin. Death toll is expected to rise. The capital of Santiago and numerous other parts of the country lost power and basic necessities including water. The quake which hit the epicenter of Maule, could be felt in various parts of Argentina where locals were to be evacuated.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning- the highest level of a tsunami alert – for all of the Pacific region including Hawaii, California, Alaska, and as far as Russia and Japan.
