Son Kept Dead Father in Wardrobe For Years

A 55 year old man in Kyoto, Japan and his son did not report the death of his father so that he could still receive his father's government pension checks.

After his father passed away some five years ago, the son stashed the body in a wardrobe and kept it there even after the body began to smell. Amazingly enough, none of the don's neighbors complained about the smell.

Son might have gotten away with this ghastliness for more years but he fell ill and had to be hospitalized.  During his hospitalization Son's ex-wife went over to his apartment to check on her ex father-in-law whom she knew had been living with Son for quite some time.  Not seeing any clothing or personal items of her ex father-in-law in the apartment and smelling something terrible, she called the authorities.  The authorities who responded had but to follow their nose to the mummified remains in the wardrobe.  Son is now being investigated for fraud and abandonment of his father's body.  I wonder if there is a law against dishonorably stashing a parent's body.

The elderly are revered in Japan and statistics show that the Japanese live long life spans.  Now I am suspicious of this because it appears that this is not an isolated incident, families have been hushing up the deaths of their elderly in order to continue to receive government pension checks. It seems greed is alive and well and often hidden in a cupboard.
