A couple of months ago, I went through my friends list on Facebook and purged about 30 “friends” who I never really see or talk to, either online or in person.

Apparently I’m lucky to still be alive.

Last week in Mountain City, Tennessee, a father became so upset a couple had deleted his daughter on Facebook that he went to their house and murdered them.

Police have now charged Marvin Potter, 60, with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Billy Payne Jr., 36, and Billy Jean Hayworth, 23. The couple was shot to death in their northeast Kentucky home between 5:30am and 10:30am on January 31.

The most depressing part of the story? Their 8-month-old baby was found—unharmed—in his dead mother’s arms.

Police say Payne and Hayworth had filed report with them claiming Janelle Porter, 30, had been harassing them ever since they deleted her as a friend on Facebook. Police also revealed that they had been involved in previous “incidents” where Porter believed she had been “slighted” by someone. So it seems that the Porter family has some loose wiring.

So, too, does Marvin Porter’s friend, 38-year-old Jamie Curd, who has also been charged in connection with the murders. Curd apparently has romantic feelings toward Janelle Porter, so he got involved as a way of defending the woman’s honor...or some crazy nonsense like that.

In any case, I think the lesson we should all take away from this is not be careful who you unfriend on Facebook, but rather be careful who you add as a friend in the first place. When you add people you don’t know that well, there’s always a chance they may turn out to be psychos.
