Special Effects Guy Creates Creepy Skinless Robot Baby
I’m glad special effects for television and movies have come so far. I mean, who didn’t love Avatar, right?
Still, couldn’t they have put some skin on this little robot infant before showing it all to the world? Good Lord.
A special effects designer named Chris Clark created this little animatronic gizmo to play a premature baby on an unnamed British soap opera. To get all the movements right and make the thing look like a real infant, Clark did a lot of research into child development and psychology.
As he explained, “[A baby's] brain is still trying to figure out which electrical impulses control which body parts...I design the mechanics to move generically the way a baby does. The rest is getting into the head of the baby when puppeteering it.”
Seems like an awful lot of work for something that probably won’t even be on screen for that long. I mean, couldn’t they have just used clever photography and/or computer generated imagery?
Then again, if you’ve got the time and someone else has got the money, why not, right? And besides, robots are cool...unless they’re skinless infant robots.
Anyway, have a look at this video. If you’ve ever wondered what baby terminators look like, well then here you go.
