Equatorial Guinea is taking strict action in response to a scandal involving Baltasar Ebang Engonga, the director of the National Financial Investigation Agency, who allegedly recorded hundreds of explicit videos featuring himself and multiple women, including relatives and spouses of high-ranking officials.
The 54-year-old economist, commonly known as “Bello,” was arrested after authorities discovered over 400 explicit videos featuring himself with multiple women, including wives and relatives of the country’s top officials.
This revelation emerged amid a fraud investigation that led ANIF officials to conduct an unannounced search of Engonga’s office. There, they found CDs containing recordings of his encounters with high-profile individuals. The scandal has exposed connections with notable figures, including Engonga’s brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President, the wife of the Director General of Police, and the spouses of approximately 20 ministers.
The country’s Vice President, Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, announced plans to install surveillance cameras in government offices to monitor and curb improper or illicit behavior. He emphasized a zero-tolerance policy, stating that any official caught engaging in sexual activity on government premises will be dismissed. “Anyone caught having any form of sexual activity in an office will be sacked.” The scandal has intensified public scrutiny of government integrity and ethical standards.
Adding another layer to the investigation, Prosecutor General Anatolio Nzang Nguema indicated that authorities also examine whether Engonga knowingly endangered public health. He noted that “the authorities want to establish whether the man deliberately used these relationships to spread a possible disease among the population.” If medical tests reveal he carried a sexually transmitted disease, he may face further charges for potentially spreading it deliberately.
This scandal highlights deeper issues of misconduct and corruption within the government, pressing authorities to reinforce accountability and transparency.
