Two Yankees Fans Face Game 5 Ban After Intense Incident with Mookie Betts (VIDEO)

They came, they reached, they got booted. Two Yankees fans took fan interference to a whole new level in Game 4 of the World Series, landing them a ban from Game 5.

Their big moment? Trying to wrestle the ball away from Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts as he caught a popup.

Two Fans, One Epic Interference

The moment took place early, in the very first inning. Betts sprinted into foul ground, reaching for a popup when suddenly, a fan in a gray Yankees road jersey leaned in, making a wild grab at the ball.

Not wanting to be outdone, a second fan in sunglasses and a pinstripe jersey decided to up the ante by grabbing Betts’ wrist as he tried to secure the catch. It was an instant mess—but not the good kind.

The result? Umpires called Yankees batter Gleyber Torres out, while stadium security swiftly ejected the fans from the game.

Fan interference is a gray area in baseball, but in this case, it was black and white. “Last night two fans were ejected from Yankee Stadium for egregious and unacceptable physical contact with Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts,” the Yankees said in a statement the next day.

According to the team, fan behavior crossed the line from passionate support to physical interference, and they weren’t having it. The Yankees emphasized that “the safety and security of players, fans, and Stadium staff is the foundational element of every event held at Yankee Stadium, and it cannot be compromised.”

Interestingly, the Yankees still won the game 11-4, proving they didn’t need a chaotic fan boost to perform. Game 5 was set for the next night, with the Dodgers leading the best-of-7 series at 3-1.

As the Yankees prepared for their final home game of the season, they made it clear they wanted fan enthusiasm—but only if it stayed within the boundaries of good sportsmanship.

Passion or Trouble? Where’s the Line?

The incident sparked conversation among fans and analysts alike. Some were surprised at how bold these fans got. Fan interference is nothing new in baseball, but this level of aggression raised eyebrows.

There’s always a bit of fan-player interaction when a ball goes into the stands, and usually, it’s seen as fair game if the ball is clearly out of play. But here’s the catch: Betts had already secured the ball on the field, making it off-limits for fans.

A Yankees spokesperson summed it up: “Tonight marks the final home game of the year, and we want every ounce of our fans’ passion on display. Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity; however, the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line into intentionally putting players at physical risk.”

The message was clear—cheer all you want, but don’t get in the way.

Meet the Man Behind the Gray Jersey

As it turns out, the fan in question, Austin Capobianco, isn’t exactly a stranger to Yankee Stadium’s fan scene. The 38-year-old Connecticut resident wasn’t shocked by the ban but was upset about its impact on his family’s season tickets.

“The banning to tonight’s game was kind of expected, but the fact my little brother and his friends can’t use our season tickets tonight has really pissed me off,” he texted NBC News. He’s got a point—it’s not like there’s another home game they can attend this year.

While the Capobianco incident may feel extreme, fan interference isn’t as rare as you’d think. Fans overstepping boundaries has played into some of the most talked-about moments in baseball history.

Think back to Steve Bartman, the infamous Cubs fan, or Jeffrey Maier, the kid who snagged Derek Jeter’s would-be home run. Baseball fans have been blurring the line between spectators and participants for years.

But in recent times, security has become much tighter. Teams don’t just rely on a high-five and “better luck next time” when someone interferes. If you grab at a player or mess with an active play, expect consequences.

Betts Brushes It Off, Yankees Stay Firm

Betts managed to stay calm, though it was clear he didn’t appreciate the interference. He walked away from the incident without any visible signs of frustration, focused on the game. As for the Yankees, they’re making sure this incident doesn’t repeat.

They reminded fans that the rules on interference are in place for a reason—not just to keep things fair but to protect players from unwelcome interactions. The team and Major League Baseball maintain a “zero-tolerance policy” for fan behavior that puts players at risk.

The Rules: What’s Allowed and What’s Not?

For those wondering, baseball’s interference rules are simple: a fan and a player have equal rights to the ball if it’s in the stands. But if a player’s on the field? That’s off-limits for fans. In this case, Betts was well within the field of play, so there was no question about the call.

Still, it seems Capobianco and his buddy decided to test the limits, hoping for a moment of glory but ending up with a game-long ban.

With Game 5 being the last home game, there’s a lot at stake, and Yankee fans are known for bringing the energy. But after this, it’s likely fans will be a little more careful about “supporting” from the sidelines.

While it’s always fun to get involved, it’s a reminder that there’s a line between cheering on your team and messing with the game. The Yankees made it clear they love their fans, but they aren’t willing to compromise player safety.
